Mercy-givers sense and reflect the spiritual and emotional atmosphere around them. Whereas prophets, organizers, and teachers tend to project their attitudes to others, individuals who have the gifts of mercy and exhorting are more likely to sense how others are feeling.

Mercies need to be needed. People with this gift must reach out and get. The spiritual gift of mercy isn’t just a spiritual gift for a select few as some may suppose. In fact, the spiritual gift of mercy is much deeper, and far-reaching, than an item on a spiritual gifts list.

Mercy as Listed. Mercy is one of seven spiritual gifts listed in the book Author: Danielle Bernock. Mercy is more than a feeling; it is always followed by an action. This gift has a practical application of active service as well as a responsibility to do so cheerfully (Romans ).

Additionally, we are all called to be merciful. The gift of mercy is founded in God’s mercy towards us as sinners and is consistently expressed with measurable compassion.

Those with this gift are able to “weep with those who weep” (Romans ) and “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians ).

I think the reason that the book of Revelation was given to John precisely because of his mercy gift. Revelation is filled with tribulation. A prophet without the gift of mercy might have been tempted to miss God’s heart aching over His rebellious creation.
